The flood-ravaged city of Lismore has been evacuated and Byron Bay’s main street is under water following more drenching rain in northern NSW. We're blogging the latest developments:
Lismore residents have been urged to get out of the area now, after the levee’s sirens failed to sound due to a malfunction.Local MP Justine Elliot alerts residents to the issue on Facebook.“NOTE: SIRENS WILL NOT SOUND - THERE IS A MALFUNCTION. You MUST get out now.”Lismore’s Wilsons River has overtopped the levee this morning and could reach 11m in the coming hours, the BOM has forecast.
The Wilsons River levee last overtopped at the end of February, causing deadly flooding for the region.Lismore resident Anna Treneman has been volunteering at the national Indigenous newspaper Koori Mail’s makeshift recovery centre, helping make 2000 hot meals a day for flood-affected residents. Byron Shire mayor Michael Lyon said he was awaiting advice from the SES, but that no evacuation orders were currently in place.“River heights in Billinudgel and Mullumbimby are holding, though I don’t know how, given how much rain has fallen and continues to fall.”Byron Bay real estate agent Damien Smith took to Facebook to share a video of the main street on Wednesday morning.
Beating all records dating back to 1859, Sydney has now clocked 527.4mm of rain for the month of March as of 6am on Wednesday, marking its wettest March in history with 42 hours to spare. The previous highest March total was set in 1942 which saw 521.4mm of rain.
