Although it’s set to be a soaking morning, the Bureau of Meteorology expects the heavy rainfall to begin to ease this afternoon and evening.

Daniel Osborne, from the NSW State Emergency Service, said nearly 70 evacuation orders remained in place early on Monday morning. “It’s just unnecessary and putting people’s lives at risk including emergency service responders. It was people stuck in cars because they tried to get through floodwater,” he said.

Thousands of homes in parts of Sydney that have never previously flooded were told to prepare to evacuate on Sunday night with forecasts thatThe NSW SES issued dozens of evacuation orders late on Sunday, including parts of Emu Plains and Emu Heights, as heavy rainfall continued to lash a 500-kilometre stretch of coast from Newcastle to Batemans Bay.
