Sports Minister Steve Kamper is considering proposing the option in an effort to stop physical attacks against referees and volunteers, following an alleged assault on a referee inThe government has started working with major codes, venue operators and community groups to investigate new penalties aimed at protecting referees and volunteers.

"Our referees and volunteers deserve our respect, but more importantly they deserve to be safe," Kamper said. "We are looking forward to working with sport organisations on how we can ensure that this behaviour is stamped out of our grassroots sporting communities. "Without volunteers there is no grassroots sport – we must do everything in our power to ensure they feel safe and respected."

Khodr Yaghi, 45, was allegedly attacked after reffing a soccer game in Sydney's southwest earlier this month.
