NSW headed for ‘significant flu epidemic’ as cases triple | lucy_carroll marywardy
Flu vaccine uptake is down on previous years, with experts fearing “vaccine fatigue” has set in.Cases are expected to gradually rise in coming weeks with a dramatic increase expected in peak winter months.
Nurse Mariia Kulchitska prepares a dose of flu vaccine for patient Bronte May-Horswood at the O’Connell Street Clinic in Sydney on Wednesday.Experts fear vaccine fatigue is setting in after a year-long COVID-19 vaccine rollout, and low levels of immunity after a drop-off in influenza cases has left people “unarmed” against the highly contagious virus.
“While people might be sick of vaccination - and there is definitely less of an appetite for vaccines after COVID-19 – there needs to be an awareness flu is back and vaccination is the best tool to protect against illness.” “It does exist – there is vaccine fatigue – and we are likely to see the impact of that problem as the year progresses,” he said.
“This year there is particular concern for those young children aged two and under, who have never lived through a flu season or gained any immunity to the virus,” Health Protection NSW’s Dr Vicky Sheppeard said last week, stressing the state had ample vaccine supply.
