NSW Health dumps year 12 vaccination transport plan at last minute | JordsBaker
NSW Health scrapped has its plan to transport year 12 students to their vaccinations by bus at the last minute and is instead telling them to make their own way there, a move principals say will put hesitant or disadvantaged kids off getting their shots.
When the plan was originally announced earlier this week, some parents had been worried about students being forced to travel in “petrie dish” buses. On Friday at the government press conference, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said they could also make their own way there. Schools with students able to make their own way to Olympic Park - who had cars of their own, or parents willing or able to drive them - were okay with the new plan, although angry that yet again the government had changed its mind yet again.
Another third said students at their school “won’t travel at the best of times”. “They speak English as a second language. The kids who are wavering will say, ‘stuff that - it’s three hours on the train, it’ll take out the whole day’.” “Education did their bit, trying hard to work with health on the buses but let’s just say the staff apparently weren’t that keen to be supervising - the education staff,” he said. ’In the end it was decided that a lot of the kids, young people have their own licenses anyway and their mums and dads have indicated they will be more than happy to take them so it is just a reasonable way to do it.”
