NSW is in COVID-19 limbo with Premier Gladys Berejiklian adamant the lockdown measures do not need tightening while her Chief Health Officer has warned rising case numbers are too high to consider relaxing restrictions
.
“Now, I want Australia to get to Christmas, but I want everybody around that table at Christmas time.” “If we need to do more enforcement we would, based on the health advice. But we’re not in the business of putting in provisions or asking people to do things if they’re not going to have an effect of reducing the case numbers.”“From my public health perspective I’m not happy that these case numbers are increasing, and we certainly need to do all we can, and compliance will be one of those components,” Dr Chant said.
Dr Chant indicated she believed vaccine rates needed to be much higher than the Premier’s 50 per cent target. However, she identified a birthday party at West Hoxton as a “super seeding event” which saw the Delta strain escape into the community. There have now been 5805 cases since June 16. Bondi Beach Public School, in Sydney’s east, was shut on Tuesday after a student tested positive to COVID-19, however the bulk of infections continues to emerge in Sydney’s west and south-west.
Mr Hazzard said he had called on NSW Health’s legal team to consider whether they can “tighten” up rules regarding travel from Sydney into regional areas, which is permitted for people moving between their properties and to look at real estate.
