The judge who led the investigation into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan has been tapped to lead the National Anti Corruption Commission.
Paul Brereton, the NSW judge who led the investigation into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan, has emerged as the federal government’s pick to lead the National Anti-Corruption Commission.and according to well-placed sources will be taken to cabinet as the choice of Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus.Edwina Pickles
Justice Brereton, 65, also carries the rank of major-general in the Australian Army Reserve, having enlisted in 1975. He was a barrister before joining the NSW Supreme Court in 2005. On Monday, former SAS soldier Oliver Schulz, became the first Australian serviceman or veteran to be charged with a war crime under Australian law. He was shown in an ABCMr Dreyfus’ office declined to comment on media reports about Justice Brereton’s appointment, which must be ratified by the parliamentary oversight committee for the NACC.
