NSW Liberals set targets to ensure more women contest state election | AlexSmithSMH Rabe9

The NSW Liberals have agreed to set a target to guarantee more women contest next year’s state election after a disastrous federal result in which the teal independents seized key seats.

The party has refused to consider quotas, but has accepted that targets are less binding but could be effective. Upton, the former environment minister and the state’s first female attorney-general, who is now parliamentary secretary to the premier, released a statement confirming she would not recontest her eastern suburbs seat.

The federal election saw the Liberals go from 13 women in the House of Representatives to nine. Meanwhile, in NSW, of the 44 state Liberal MPs in Macquarie Street, only 13 are female. Upton was first elected to parliament in 2011 as the member for Vaucluse, a safe Liberal seat in Sydney’s eastern suburbs held on a margin of 19 per cent.
