Premier Dominic Perrottet announced a raft of early preselections while party members passed major changes to neutralise a party position held most recently by powerbroker Alex Hawke.

The motions passed on Saturday drastically curtail the power of the party leader’s representative on the executive and set a clear timeline for preselections. “It was a total rebuke to the centre-right and Alex Hawke who have had the party by the scruff of its neck for nine months ... we took action against that yesterday,” one senior party official toldMr Perrottet added his weight to the motions with his own announcement firing the starting gun on preselections for the state election. He said the party had learnt from the federal election.
Absent from Saturday’s meeting were Mr Ayres and Transport Minister David Elliott.
