Complexities around the scale, number of participants and history of COVID-19 cases in NSW have delayed the resumption of football.

NSW could be the last state to allow football to resume with players and participants still no closer to knowing when they will be permitted to return to training, let alone games.

A decision on when grassroots football can recommence won't likely be made until the start of next week despite other states having already released timelines on training resumption and a return to games. This week, Victoria committed to a June 28 start for games while Queensland announced all training will resume on June 12.Louie Douvis

However, complexities around the scale, number of participants and history of COVID-19 cases in NSW have delayed the resumption of football. NSW is the state with the most number of cases of the virus in Australia while also representing the country's largest football participation base, with more than 310,000 registered players. A June date has been flagged for training to begin but is far from a certainty.

"Football NSW is in ongoing discussions with government, member associations and NPL clubs, to work through a range of different options with regards to competition schedules and returning to competition as soon as practically possible," FNSW chief executive Stuart Hodge said."We are engaging with the Government as to when we may be able to return to competitive play. We remain committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure competitive play can resume as soon as possible.
