Breaking: A man with links to government departments has been arrested in Bondi for allegedly sharing national security information with foreign intelligence

Federal police say two foreign spies recruited a Sydney man to gather Australian defence and security secrets in just the second arrest under Australia’s foreign interference laws.

Sources said the alleged foreign interference scheme was related to China, but an AFP spokeswoman declined to comment. It will be alleged an individual claiming to be from a think tank contacted the man via social media while he was outside Australia and made arrangements for the 55-year-old to meet with the individual’s representatives.The AFP said that on a number of occasions met two people known to him as “Ken” and “Evelyn”, who offered him money to gather information about Australian defence, economic and national security arrangements as well as matters relating to other countries.

It will be alleged in court “Ken” and “Evelyn” work for a foreign intelligence service and are undertaking intelligence collection activities.It is understood the man was recruited by a foreign country to provide information about Australia.
