Mobile phone detection cameras will soon also capture people not wearing a seatbelt in New South Wales and lead to fines and demerit points from 2025.Independent modelling showed deterrence from the fixed cameras could save up to 26 lives over the next five yearsAlthough it will be 50 years after seatbelts were mandated, the state government says far too many people are still not wearing the safety restraint.

The move follows Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania, with these states introducing similar technology in recent years. Changes to legislation will be introduced to state parliament next week to begin a public awareness campaign. "Over 84 per cent of fatalities and two-thirds of serious injuries where people are not wearing seatbelts occur on country roads," she said.
