There is a risk of flash flooding on the mid-north coast and northern rivers on Thursday and into Friday
A flood watch is in place for areas of northernA widespread rain band has seen more than 100mm dumped on some areas in 24 hours, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of the potential for up to 80mm more in the northern rivers and mid north coast on Thursday afternoon.
“Minor to moderate” flood warnings are in place for the Tweed, Brunswick and Wilsons rivers, all of which flooded in the major disaster in February. The BoM has a flood watch in place for the Hunter, mid north coast and northern rivers regions, with Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Sawtell and Lismore – the town hit by two major floods already this year - among areas affected. During a flood watch, locals living or working along rivers and streams are asked to “monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop”.“As you’re aware, the Northern Rivers is currently under a flood watch for minor to moderate flooding in certain areas. A flood watch is a heads up for possible flooding,” it said on Facebook. “We are aware this rain and the sound of it can cause some people to be anxious, especially with what we’ve all been through!” Authorities are expected to address the media at 3pm. The state’s emergency services minister, Steph Cooke, has urged residents to monitor conditions and prepare for the possibility of flooding, including in the Northern Rivers. “Many communities across NSW, including the #NorthernRivers, are facing the threat of flooding today,” she tweeted. “Please follow the advice of the @NSWSES and warnings from the @BOM_NSW to stay safe.”
