NSW paramedics have begun five days of industrial action and won't bill patients or travel outside their home station area as they demand a raise in pay, 1,500 more paramedics and more specialist workers.

The Australian Paramedics Association announced the action would begin on Friday night May 27 and would run to the end of the day shift on Wednesday June 1.

Patients who require an ambulance during the industrial action period will therefore receive the treatment for free. Paramedics will also chalk their ambulances with messages with phrases outlining how long they have been working. “We Deserve Better, lowest paid Paramedics in Oz, paramedics and nurses deserve better, NSW deserves better, our patients deserve better than 8 hours in bed block 1500 paramedics now! And overworked! Undervalued!,” will also be written on the ambulances.

Legislation in NSW caps public servant wage increases at 2.5 per cent but NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet told reporters on Friday all public sectors would be considered for pay raises in the state budget. The statement follows a move from NSW Ambulance to trial a program that will provide patients with alternative transport if they call triple-0 without an emergency.
