Hundreds of pharmacies in New South Wales (NSW) are now able to treat mild skin conditions, allowing patients to avoid costly GP visits and freeing up appointments for those in greater need. This service, part of a six-month trial, allows pharmacists to manage impetigo, shingles, mild to moderate eczema, and acute mild plaque psoriasis.
Hundreds of NSW pharmacies are now able to treat mild skin conditions, allowing those who have them to skip costly trips to the GP, and free up GP appointments for those in need. Pharmacists already offer consultations for urinary tract infections and the resupply of the oral contraceptive pill following trials for the respective services.
“Imagine, instead of struggling to find a GP appointment to receive a script for a minor skin condition, you could just pop down to your local pharmacy, and receive the care you need, when you need it,” NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park said. The Pharmacy Guild of Australia Senior Vice of President of the NSW branch Catherine Bronger called it “a critical initiative, supporting and evolving the NSW healthcare landscape”.
