New South Wales Police have brought in a former human rights commissioner to conduct an official review of the culture within the force following an ABC News investigation.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb says she is "horrified" by the allegations of bullying and sexism in the ranks.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb announced in an interview with ABC News today that she had engaged former Victorian equal opportunity human rights commissioner Kristen Hilton to conduct the review. An ABC investigation has uncovered allegations of bullying, sexism and a dangerous lack of support within the ranks of NSW Police.

"I think it's important that I have someone outside of our organisation who's experienced to come in and have a look, fresh eyes," Commissioner Webb said.'Still such a boys' club' "Once you've been identified as having PTSD or an issue of some sort you become a liability," she said. Commissioner Webb did not rule out the need for a royal commission following the review, but said she hoped it wouldn't be necessary.
