SARAH FERGUSON: Now this is the sixth time the police have carried out these raids under the Amarok operation. What's the purpose of these multi-day raids?
So during Operation Amarok we engaged with about 550 people that we classify as dangerous domestic violence offenders. PETER THURTELL: So of the 550 odd people that we arrested over the last four days, 200 of those people had outstanding warrants and they could be from anything for domestic violence related warrants to other criminal matters. However, they came onto our attention for domestic violence related matters.
SARAH FERGUSON: And just for the sake of the audience, that's an apprehended domestic violence order to protect someone who has had one of those orders taken out on their behalf by police? So you're right, it is indicative that something is not working. The police only play one role in this. There's a whole of government approach to it. There's a justice system approach to it but some parts of it aren't working as well as they should.PETER THURTELL: A whole of government approach is certainly what we believe is needed. The police is only the early part of the criminal justice system.
SARAH FERGUSON: Do you think there's enough understanding in the community about coercive control? It can be as simple as taking the car keys off someone so they can't go out when they want to. Do you think the community understands clearly enough that that's going to be a crime? PETER THURTELL: Yes. There was a number of examples of that where the person in need of protection was actually with the offender at the time.
PETER THURTELL: I can tell you limited information. Today, there was, there was the father, the bodies of a father and a two-year-old child discovered in Lismore. PETER THURTELL: The ADVO was taken out in July last year. The exact circumstances surrounding why that was taken out are the subject of this investigation.
