The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 has passed 1000 in NSW, as the state recorded 18,278 new cases and two deaths on Sunday.
Sunday’s hospitalisations were up from Boxing Day one week ago, when there were 458 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, and 52 people in intensive care. “In four days time that is about 40,000 cases, and four days after that 80,000 cases, so you can see how easily it can reach 100,000 cases,” he said.Professor Esterman said it was a “near certainty” the NSW government would be forced to reintroduce additional measures to subdue the soaring caseload as the health system was “creaking at the seams”.“We will continue adapting our response as needed and if the facts and our evidence base change, we will adapt again.
The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association says there is a “widespread staffing crisis” in the state’s hospitals.
