NSW Health said both main sub-lineages of the Omicron variant are circulating in the state but the proportion of BA.2 has increased in 'recent weeks'.

Health authorities said the state added another 20,087 cases to its tally on Thursday, down slightly from 20,402 one day earlier.The recent spike above 20,000 comes amid continued warnings from health authorities the prevalence of the virus will continue to grow as the state enters the cooler months and as a more contagious Omicron sub-variant continues to circulate.

Picture: Lisa Maree Williams/Getty Images The Omicron variant remains the dominant COVID-19 variant of concern circulating in the NSW community.“Both main sub-lineages of the Omicron variant are circulating in NSW, with the proportion of BA.2 increasing in recent weeks,” the statement read.The department said the surge in infections came from 12,748 rapid antigen tests and 7,654 PCR swabs.
