New South Wales has recorded 29 COVID-19 deaths, including three people in their 40s, in what is the highest number of deaths recorded in a day by any state during the pandemic.

On Friday the state recorded 63,018 new cases of COVID-19 with 2,525 patients currently battling the virus in hospital, 184 requiring intensive care treatment and 59 on a ventilator.

Try 14 days free now From the fatalities, of the three people aged in their 40s two were fully vaccinated, while one had no record of a vaccination and died from the Delta strain. Dr Chant said in one of the cases there was significant underlying health conditions.

Dr Chant revealed that some of the people who were reported as having died by COVID-19 may not have died as a direct result of the virus.
