There are 1609 people in NSW hospitals with the virus, of whom 131 are in intensive care units.

NSW has recorded 34,994 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths as Premier Dominic Perrottet suggests elective surgery may be suspended to ease pressure on the healthcare system.

There is currently no way to register a positive rapid antigen test with health authorities, meaning those infections will not be included in daily case numbers. The data, taken from the NSW Health COVID-19 surveillance report, showed that in the two weeks to December 18 there were 285 confirmed Omicron infections, of which 212 were in people who had received two doses of a coronavirus vaccine. The disparity grew when comparing “probable Omicron cases” recorded during that time – cases with the S-gene drop-out associated with the variant – with all other cases.
