Testing numbers have dropped off but the number of COVID patients in hospital or intensive care continues to steadily increase.

NSW has recorded another 6,062 COVID-19 cases and one death while the number of COVID patients in hospital continues to rise.Sixty patients are now in intensive care, an increase from 39 people a week ago.

The drop could be the result of overwhelmed testing centres having to turn people away and the health minister's request for people to not get tested unless they were close contacts or symptomatic. Many people are having to wait up to five days to receive their PCR results as pathology providers work through backlogs of tests.

"The focus should be only on clinical testing. The energy and capacity of pathology is being sucked out of New South Wales," Mr Hazzard said.
