It’s hoped the crews will be part of a broader push to better harness traditional knowledge in land management, in the wake of the bushfire crisis.
Christopher ‘Burra’ McHughes stands at the edge of the ancient Aboriginal fish traps that lure tourists to the outback town of Brewarrina, an hour’s drive from Bourke in north-western NSW.
"If we do more cultural burns around places like that, I know that we will save those things," Mr McHughes said. “The boys are really enjoying it. And if they can grab it with both hands, they can go a long way,” Mr Barker said.Their methods can be a little unorthodox. Techniques such as these have helped the crews gain access to isolated areas that previously had little interaction with other RFS brigades who were largely “disconnected” from Aboriginal communities.
“It's a good foot in the door for other young Indigenous people coming through,” said Bourke crew member Robert Wilson-Elwood, 26.
