Correction: Disgraced former MP Daryl Maguire is receiving $80k in pension and his legal bills are being funded by taxpayers while he is being grilled by the ICAC.
On 23 May, a fortnight after the signing ceremony, Premier Gladys Berejiklian, who was in a secret relationship with Mr Maguire at the time, announced the introduction of legislation to strip former politicians of their taxpayer-funded pension entitlement if they were convicted of a serious criminal offence committed during their time in office, even if those charges came after they had left parliament.
At the time Obeid was serving a three-year jail sentence over his corrupt dealings relating to cafe leases at Circular Quay. Former resources minister Ian Macdonald was also jailed over a coal deal, which was subsequently overturned on appeal. Both men are currently facing trial over further allegations of misconduct in public office over a coal exploration licence granted over Obeid’s farm in the Bylong Valley.
The Premier also said it was “just not fair” for former politicians convicted of serious offences to be able ‘to live off their taxpayer-funded pension entitlement.”No findings of corruption have been made against Mr Maguire who quit parliament in July 2018 after allegations against him surfaced in an earlier corruption inquiry into Canterbury Council.
Coincidentally, Mr Maguire is being represented at the corruption inquiry by Jim Harrowell, who was photographed at Parliament House alongside Mr Maguire and Mr Liu at the 2017 signing ceremony.
