Candidates in Sydney’s inner north and eastern suburbs deny their communities are anti-development in response to new analysis.
The teal candidates in each seat deny that local communities are anti-development, highlighting that their areas already have high population density.
But Vaucluse teal candidate Karen Freyer claims the focus on under-development is being driven by property developers. “Developers act as though boosting housing supply is a panacea for our problems ... [but] profit-making developers aren’t going to collapse the value of their product,” she said. “When there is rezoning or upzoning, it should only be done with full approvals for all necessary infrastructure. This government is undermining its own development objectives by developing in isolation.”Outgoing Liberal minister for cities Rob Stokes, whose seat of Pittwater is also facing a teal challenge, conceded that “we need more housing everywhere” but criticised Dr Tulip’s method of comparing small inner-city councils with large outer suburban areas.
“The type of supply that is being built and provided here in the eastern suburbs isn’t the type of supply that our children will be able to afford,” said Ms Freyer. “I would encourage the government to boost the supply of more diverse housing, not just the $5 million apartments.”
