NSW will end isolation requirements for household contacts of COVID-positive people by the weekend as the latest Omicron wave subsides

NSW and Victoria will end isolation requirements for household contacts of COVID-positive people by this weekend as both states pass the peak of the latest Omicron wave.

Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley is set to announce changes to household contact rules and mask rules on Wednesday or Thursday that will come into effect Friday or Saturday, according to two government sources speaking confidentially to detail the plans. On Tuesday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said he believed the state had also passed the peak of its case wave, flagging restrictions would be scrapped “very, very soon”.

“As I’ve said consistently for a few weeks now, once we got past the peak, once we started to see case numbers coming down, we would have more options,” Andrews said, noting the state needed to “see through that those few days of data turn into the trend that we hope that it is”. Suggestions for replacement measures included frequent rapid antigen testing, minimising close contacts’ access to high-risk settings such as aged care facilities and hospitals, and wearing masks outside of the home.
