NSW to extend free flu vaccination scheme | marywardy
NSW will extend its free flu shots program until mid-July to encourage the millions yet to receive a vaccine to come forward, as cases continue to present to hospitals.
The state had record numbers of flu infections in June, due to an earlier than usual flu season and increased testing. PCR tests for COVID-19 also returned results for other respiratory viruses. In June, NSW joined Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania in funding free flu vaccines for people aged five to 64, who were not eligible for a free shot from the federal government.
No council area has a flu vaccination rate of above 50 per cent but health authorities are particularly concerned about coverage in Sydney’s west and south-west. Only 25 per cent of Canterbury-Bankstown and Fairfield residents were vaccinated, compared to more than 40 per cent in Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby and Hunters Hill.Byron, in the state’s Northern Rivers, had the lowest uptake of less than 20 per cent.
