Universities are making provision for students stuck in China due to coronavirus, giving them the options to defer their studies or enrol late.

NSW universities are making provision for students stuck in China due to coronavirus but will otherwise continue to operate normally, as some student organisations step up their responses to the outbreak.

"At the end of the day, people in this workplace have come to the view that there is a threat to their health, certainly reasonable enough that from an organisational perspective we have to listen to that," SRC president Liam Donohoe said.Ivan Coates, a delegate with the Community and Public Sector Union that represents professional staff at the university, said some staff were also concerned.

Staff and students at Sydney and Wollongong universities have been told not to travel to China, while the University of Wollongong has paused its official travel to Hong Kong as well.unlike at Victoria's Monash UniversityInternational students returning from China to Monash campus residences have also been asked to "limit the use of public areas" and avoid gathering in groups for the next three weeks.

Macquarie University, which has an exchange partnership with Wuhan University, said it had 66 students registered at private addresses in Hubei province, where the coronavirus outbreak started.
