Universities have sent out a record number of early offers this year and applications for some admission schemes have tripled as year 12 students rush to shore up their future amid the uncertainty caused by COVID-19.

Despite a federal government proposal to significantly increase fees in some courses, such as humanities and law, while making others such as science and teaching cheaper, the UAC said there had been no noticeable change in the type of courses students were choosing. "[Students] should expect an exciting time at university, hopefully much of it face to face, but if it needs to be online, our universities will provide it as best they can.

"Remember that entrance to university is not a once-off opportunity that is closed to you forever should you miss it this year," he said. "For you, more than for any generation before, there will be multiple opportunities for a university education throughout your life."
