Volunteer firefighters in New South Wales will be eligible for up to $6,000 in compensation, as part of a federal government scheme.
The move was designed to support crews through an 'unusually demanding' season, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison said it should not set a precedent for permanent payments. Meanwhile, two total fire bans are in place in NSW as around 100 fires continue to burn.
Firefighters spent Saturday night strengthening containment lines ahead of high temperatures and dry conditions in the coming days. A very high fire danger rating was issued for much of the state's east coast, with total fire bans place in the central and southern ranges. Image: News Corp Australia
