The NT government pledged to review systemic racism in every government agency three years ago, but so far only one department has been examined.

The NT government committed to reviewing systemic racism within its departments and agencies when it signed the Aboriginal Justice Agreement in 2021.The expert who designed the framework for the review says the government needs to take its commitment "seriously".

Since then, the ABC can reveal no other review had been undertaken and the NT government had not yet decided which department would be next. "Once finalised, the department will be in a position to consider implementation measures against any recommendations outlined in the report," the spokesperson said.

Professor Cunneen was contracted by the NT government to develop the framework and methodology for the reviews. Other examples included difficulties in obtaining drivers licenses or car registration, due to distance from services."It's not about individuals being racist or not, it's about how these policies and procedures actually work or don't work to the benefit of Aboriginal people."An NT government spokesperson insisted that despite the slow progress, the review process had not "stalled".

"So it's not surprising that Aboriginal people throughout Australia, let alone the Northern Territory, become incredibly cynical about the value of these agreements if governments don't take them seriously."'Mad' ATO debt recovery is sending some small businesses to the wallWhy Peter Garrett refuses to let personal tragedy define him
