More than a year after former Barkly mayor Jeff McLaughlin was filmed restraining a child in a so-called citizen's arrest, police have closed their investigation into the incident 'with no criminal prosecution to occur'.
Former Barkly mayor Jeff McLaughlin will not face prosecution for sitting on a child during a claimed "citizen's arrest" in 2023.Mr McLaughlin, who moved with his family interstate over safety concerns, says he won't be returning to Tennant Creek .The former mayor of the Northern Territory 's Barkly Regional Council has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing over a video that emerged more than a year ago showing him restraining a child in a so-called citizen's arrest.
Another man, who can be seen in the video placing his foot on the child's head, has since pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and received a three-month suspended prison sentence.In a statement to the ABC, an NT Police Force spokesperson confirmed it had closed its investigation into the incident in relation to Mr McLaughlin.Mr McLaughlin said he had not been updated by police about the investigation.
"I've been living in hell for the last year, thinking that maybe someone might come and knock on my door," he said.After the video emerged, the 44-year-old moved interstate with his family over safety concerns."I deeply love the place, and I missed the place, but I spent 18 years there and it's just a small coterie of people that wanted to make my life a living hell.
