Authorities say two sisters are facing fines of more than $5,000 after they allegedly absconded from a quarantine facility and into a waiting getaway car.

Northern Territory police are investigating a possible COVID-19 quarantine breach in Alice Springs after two women allegedly absconded from supervised quarantine into a waiting getaway car. Both women were instructed to return after the breach was reportedAuthorities say two sisters, aged 19 and 22, left the Todd Facility by climbing the fence and into the waiting vehicle.

Both sisters, alongside their mother and the boyfriend, have now been directed into mandatory supervised quarantine. Police say the women did not attend any other locations or come into contact with anyone else, but Commander Sachin Sharma warned that this kind of event placed the community in danger.

“It’s incredible that after all this time, with deaths and lockdowns, people are still not taking this pandemic seriously,” he said in a statement. "The reason we have no community transmission in the Territory and that we are safe is because we have been diligent in ensuring anyone potentially at risk is quarantined.Police say their investigation is continuing and fines of more than $5,000 are likely to be issued today.
