Truancy officers have begun patrols in the NT, trying to get children to school and issuing fines and compliance notices to families who fail to comply.
The new Northern Territory government has started fining parents who don’t get their children to school, in a bid to try to turn around woeful school attendance figures.
The new NT government has rolled out truancy officers to enforce children's attendance at school, with parents hit with $370 fines and compliance notices for failing to get them to class. Of the fines issued, six were in the Big Rivers region, seven in Central Australia and one was in the Top End.On Friday, group of community leaders gathered in the remote NT community of Maningrida to voice their concerns about the policy, which they said “punishes families simply for being poor”.“We have been working hard to address these challenges but the government hasn’t been listening,” the group said in a joint statement.
“We, the leaders, demand that the government halt this process immediately and come to the table with us, face-to-face,” they said.
