In the late 1970s, many Melburnians saw St Kilda as a hotbed of crime, drugs and sleaze. But when Fred Negro started hanging out there, he saw a smorgasbord of characters.

“There were these crazy-looking people everywhere, everyone enjoying and dancing to this local country rock band. They were f--ing great, and they still are.”He not only formed bands of his own such as the wild punk outfit I Spit On Your Gravy but is a celebrated cartoonist.A new documentary screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival calledlooks back affectionately at the life and art of the man dubbed the unofficial mayor of St Kilda.

Negro drew cartoon playbills for St Kilda venues, then for over 20 years, from 1989, he drew a weekly satirical cartoon strip, calledThe cartoons depicted genitalia, drug use, bodily excretions, orgies and profanity. Negro says he also was documenting his community, from books he was reading to meeting funny taxi drivers.

The late guitarist for band The Birthday Party, Rowland S. Howard said:“You haven’t made it in the Melbourne music industry until you have appeared in Fred Negro’s Pub Strip.”
