EXCLUSIVE: The number of cash machines dropped from 4,869 in July 2018 to 3,584 in June this year.
Areas of Scotland risk becoming "cash deserts" after the number of ATMs declined by a fifth in five years, according to new figures.
SNP MP Owen Thompson has warned that vulnerable and elderly people are unable to get access to their money at free-to-use cash machines in large areas of the country. “Cash machines are a vital lifeline for some people. ATMs provide essential financial services to individuals by providing access to cash, balance and account information and some other functions.
“Cash is still important as a budgeting tool for so many. Some people sadly are financially vulnerable and digitally excluded and we must make sure they are not left behind by a headlong plunge towards a cashless society.”They have plummeted from 79 in 2018 to just 47 in June this year. This is a 40 percent drop.
