'We have seen across the country that the increased time spent at home and the need to juggle home-schooling and working from home has led to increased pressure on relationships'
Jack Whelan, a family dispute resolution practitioner and co-founder of The Separation Guide, said approaches for mediation had risen from one to two a week pre-pandemic to "up to 10 a day" in recent weeks.
“My sense is that there has been a lot of reflection and a lot of discussion during isolation ... It’s almost a case of, when this is over, we want to start post-pandemic life having made the changes we need to make.’” Anne Hollonds, chief executive officer of The Australian Institute of Family Studies , said it would not be surprising if relationships that were already strained had come apart during social isolation."We always find this in January after the Christmas holidays, an increase [in separation] after people have had 24/7 together for at least a little while and maybe a little bit more time on their hands to think about things and start Googling," Ms Hollonds said.
The Relationships Australia survey confirmed this, showing a fifth of those who said they were challenged by their living arrangement managed to create positive changes to relationships.
