The number of Australians who have lost their passport overseas or have had the vital travel document stolen while abroad has 'increased significantly'.

The department said it received 2,678 reports of lost passports in 2023-24, up from 2,043 in 2022-23, and 1,942 reports of stolen passports, up from 1,578. In total, more than 2.5 million passports were issued in 2023-24, with 56 per cent of Australians holding a current passport. There were 9,067 cases of consular assistance in 2023-24, the highest number since 2019-20's 11,436, with Thailand accounting for the largest number of cases , then Indonesia and the Philippines .
