Nurses work in punishing environments where they do not feel valued.

“Recently, the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania called on Gov. Josh Shapiro to address the nursing shortage throughout Pennsylvania.

I’ll argue that the problem is not a shortage of qualified nurses. Rather, it’s a shortage of nurses willing to work in unsafe, punishing environments where they do not feel valued. Meaningful ways that healthcare organizations can attract and retain qualified nursing staff include:* Expanding resources for mental health, while reducing stigmas associated with seeking care* Demonstrating respect for nurses’ essential role in ensuring patient safety and quality of care.

Too few nurses are involved in high-level, clinical decision-making. Rates of workplace violence continue to rise. Hospital systems should focus on understanding why experienced nurses are leaving direct care and why so many young, bright, eager nurse grads are abandoning the profession altogether early in their careers. It’s the conditions and culture that need to change, because they’re burning out nurses and Pennsylvania is losing talent.”If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
