Pat Cullen, the leader of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), has warned strike action could continue until Christmas if an agreement can’t be reached.
Serious disruption in the UK’s hospitals could continue until Christmas, it has been warned, as a union leader said nurses’ strikes are set to last if an agreement can’t be reached.
Pat Cullen, the leader of the Royal College of Nursing , said the government needs to put a better pay offer on the table if it doesn’t want further industrial action.its members will walk out for 48 hours from 8pm on April 30 after rejecting the latest offer. For the first time, they will include NHS nurses in emergency departments, intensive care and cancer wards.
Ms Cullen was asked if the union would stop strike action on the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday show.‘We have strike action for the end of this month and the beginning of May. Then we will move immediately to ballot our members. However, she emphasised that nurses would come off the picket lines if they need to deal with emergencies.NHS Providers deputy chief executive Saffron Cordery told the programme talks with the government were needed ‘desperately’.
She said: ‘It’s really clear to me that it’s not sustainable going forward for the NHS to manage strike action.‘We really desperately need the government to come to the table alongside the unions coming to the table to sort this out.’
