Nurses take second day of mass strike action with health services under increasing strain 🔴 Health Secretary Steve Barclay is set to meet unions for crunch talks today, with ambulance workers set to launch industrial action on Wednesday
This week, hospitals and ambulance services across the East Midlands, the North East, North West and Wales have declared critical incidents, with hundreds of 999 calls left waiting for a response.
On Monday night, London Ambulance Service declared a “business continuity incident”, warning the sickest and most severely injured patients would be prioritised as the service faces extraordinary demand. During the ambulance strike, all category 1 calls – the most life-threatening cases – will be responded to, and some ambulance trusts have agreed exemptions with unions for specific incidents within category 2 calls.
Ms Cullen said: “The Prime Minister should ask himself what is motivating nursing staff to stand outside their hospitals for a second day so close to Christmas. They are prepared to sacrifice a day’s pay to have their concerns heard. Their determination stems as much from worries over patient safety and the future of the NHS than personal hardship.
