Nurses have staged a walkout at a major Sydney hospital over plans to substitute critical care trained nurses with less experienced assistant nurses in the intensive care unit.
Nurses who had just clocked off the night shift gathered outside Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, in the city’s Upper North Shore, on Monday morning.

"There is no scenario where assistants in nursing are safe in ICU, it’s out of their scope of practice they are not qualified to work at this patient acuity level.
She said the NSW government needed to bring more nurses into the workforce instead of opening more hospitals. It comes just weeks after nurses from Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals walked off the job urging the NSW government to legislate staff-patient ratios and address critical staffing and bed shortages.
