Officials are revisiting security plans for events that draw large crowds to Northwest Indiana during the summer — such as Pierogi Fest in Whiting and Valparaiso’s Popcorn Fest — after the mass shooting in Highland Park.
Area law enforcement officials said the largest deterrent that they rely on is placing more officers throughout the event spaceValparaiso, like other communities in Northwest Indiana, went on with its fireworks and other Fourth of July festivities Monday, and also had an abortion rights protest in the morning that drew 1,000 people to the courthouse square.
“We need to know what their plans are” and whether, say, a protest on the courthouse square will be stationary or include marching through downtown, he said. “Sometimes organizations don’t want to give us that information and that’s a hindrance to keeping people safe.” “It was very well attended during the same time and I wasn’t aware of what happened until it was over,” Reynolds said.
“Historically, those kinds of weapons were not commonly available,” Stucky said. “Those calibers do far more harm than they are of any benefit.” Ryan Patrick, Interim Police Chief for the Crown Point Police Department, also stated the biggest deterrent during gatherings is “officer visibility.” The Crown Point 4th of July parade was held Monday, and the majority of the parade is held in residential areas, he said.
