The Brooklyn shelter, entangled in debates since its 2023 opening, is capable of housing up to 2,000 migrants.
A shelter at a Brooklyn airfield capable of housing up to 2,000 migrants will close within the next two months, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced in aThe Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center at Floyd Bennett Field will be one of 25 shelters to stop operating, according to Mayor Adams.
He attributed the closure to what he called his administration’s “successful asylum seeker management strategies," such as rules limiting shelter stays, which he said have reduced costs and the number of people in New York City’s shelter system. Reticketing – relocating a shelter recipient once their time limit takes effect – and “case management” have also helped decrease the number of asylum seekers in shelters for 22 straight weeks, marking the lowest point in over 17 months, according to the mayor.
“It has continued to serve as an integral component of the unprecedented system we established to receive and care for the more than 225,000 asylum seekers who walked through our doors,” she said.President Joe Biden issued an executive order in June limiting the number of migrants who can enter the U.S. each day. Those types of actions have significantly reduced the rate at which people seeking asylum are arriving in New York City for “care," according to the mayor.
