Tough new gun laws in New Zealand and are set to take effect within days after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's push and rapid response to the Christchurch terror attack.
Police minister Stuart Nash said the bill, if passed as expected, will take effect on 12 April, less than a month after the 15 March attacks which killed 50 people. Parallel to Australia's response to the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, the legislation includes a gun amnesty and a buyback scheme which will be available until September 30. The bill bans military-style semi-automatic weapons, assault rifles, and several modifications which can convert guns to having military-grade firing capacity.
