The death toll from the Whakaari volcano eruption has risen to eight after two people died in hospital.
The official death toll from New Zealand's Whakaari volcano has risen to eight after two people evacuated from the island died in hospital.
Police did not identify the victims, but one is believed to be Coffs Harbour man Jason Griffiths whose death was confirmed on Wednesday night by his travelling companions. Another eight people who were on the island at the time of the explosion are presumed dead, but authorities have been unable to access the island to recover their bodies.
New Zealand authorities will examine whether the White Island tour company were aware of any dangers or increased risks of an eruption., remains in hospital in Hamilton in a critical condition with serious burns.
