Cultural committees and departments in the village of Oak Park will be hosting community events for the monthlong commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Hispanic Heritage Month kicked off last Friday, and the village of Oak Park has a menu of activities and programs scheduled to mark the 30 days-long occasion that includes a community showing of a Disney movie favorite and speakers at the public library.
About 10% of Oak Park’s population of nearly 55,000 is Hispanic, according to U.S. Census data. The number is even greater in other nearby neighboring towns.Hispanic Heritage Month runs annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. A post on the village’s website lists the month’s activities. As part of the community events offering, “For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts” author Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez is scheduled to be the keynote speaker Sept. 24 at the Oak Park Public Library. The event is free.A community roundtable discussion “centered around the themes of prosperity, progress and power” is set for Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.
An Oct. 4 community “conversation” at Village Hall will focus on the village’s language access needs. Three days later, on Village Hall grounds, an outdoor event entitled “¡VIVA! Festival” is set to feature food, entertainment from an all-female mariachi ensemble and Peruvian folk dancers, and more.
The commemoration will culminate with a Friday night showing of Disney’s blockbuster animated film, “Encanto.” The screening is scheduled to be held outdoors at Village Hall Oct. 13.
