Oak Ridge alum Luken Baker called up by Cardinals, set for MLB debut Sunday

Baker was added to the 40-man roster and called up to St. Louis on Sunday morning from Triple-A Memphis. Catcher Tres Barrera was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. The Cardinals listed the former War Eagles and TCU standout batting seventh as the designated hitter. Two Montgomery County alums are in the lineup as The Woodlands’ Paul Goldschmidt is batting second and playing first base.The 26-year old first baseman had 18 homers and 53 RBIs in 54 games for the Memphis Redbirds. Baker has four homers in his past six games.In 438 career games in the minor leagues, Baker has 79 homers and 264 RBIs.
Baker was a 2015 graduate of Oak Ridge and a standout at the plate and on the mound for the War Eagles under coach Mike Pirtle. Right before stepping on campus at TCU, Baker was the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
