Three firefighters were injured and transported to a nearby hospital.
The street was littered with rubble from the ground floor of the apartment building, which sustained most of the damage from the crash. It also subsequently led to an eight-hour power outage and flooding caused by damaged pipes. No other residents or passersby were hurt, though one of the units was occupied at the time of the accident and some of the tenants had to leave the building until inspectors deemed it structurally sound enough for them to return that evening, Hunt said.
The fire department is still working with the Oakland Police Department to investigate the cause of the crash as the building undergoes repairs. Upon reviewing surveillance footage, Hunt said it appeared the oncoming vehicle sped through a red light before veering in front of the fire truck. “This seemed to be an avoidable incident,” he said. “It cannot be emphasized enough — when drivers encounter emergency vehicles using lights and sirens, they must always move to the right edge of the road and stop until all the emergency vehicles have safely passed.”Michael Hunt, Oakland Fire Department
