Oatmeal is a healthy, filling snack that can help fuel your runs. Is it just as good for you in milk form?

With about 20 grams in each cup, oat milk is certainly higher in carbs than almond, cashew, and coconut milks, which can be a perk or a downfall depending on your dietary goals. If you’re restricting carbohydrates in your diet , then oat milk may not be what you want to reach for. But the extra carbs can help fuel hard-charging runners. “Quality carbs from foods like oats can build up carbohydrate stores in the body, which will be burned as fuel for activity,” notes Morgan.

So if you’ve switched to oat milk, just make sure to take into account its calorie count if you’re watching your waistline. On the flipside, Morgan believes these extra calories can help meet energy needs during periods of hard training when you aren’t necessarily looking to shave calories from your diet.

Pretty much all alternative milks including oat have to be fortified with vitamins and minerals in order to improve their nutritional content. The popular brand Oatly, for example, adds vitamins D and B12, as well as calcium–three nutrients you’d get from dairy. But as long as you’re getting those nutrients from somewhere else in a balanced diet, they don’t necessarily need to be in your oat milk.
